Common Forms of Cancer

When we speak of cancer, we're not talking about one single condition, but a collection of 100 different forms of cancer.  Altogether, they form one of the deadliest diseases in the U.S. and across the world.  Separately, some have an extremely-high mortality rate, while others, when caught early, are usually curable.  In this section of the website, we will examine some of the more common and more significant types of cancer.  Some of the ones we'll examine include:

Lung Cancer - This is the deadliest form of cancer, due largely because of the prevalence of cigarette smoking.  Excessive pollution also plays a part.  Those affected by this kind of cancer experience breathing difficulties, extreme chest pain, and a loss of appetite.  Surgery sometimes, but not always, is recommended for lung cancer.  Chemotherapy is a common treatment.  Read more here.

Prostate Cancer - This cancer affects only men, since only men have a prostate.  A major symptom is pain as one urinates.  Especially susceptible are older men.  Some contributing factors include lack of Vitamin E, excessive animal fat, heredity, and possibly radiation.  Read more here.

Breast Cancer - Where as prostate cancer is found only in men, breast cancer is prevalent in women, and consists of three different forms.  Age plays a factor, with women over 80 years old more likely to get it.  Some contributing factors include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and heredity.  Breast cancer is one cancer which can be treated effectively when caught early. Read more here.

Lymphoma - This is a condition in which cancer attacks the blood cells.  Lymphoma requires a highly-individualized treatment plan, primarily because the number of blood cells affected vary for each person.  Several treatment methods are used. Read more here.

Colorectal Cancer - This is also known as cancer of the bowel, and usually occurs in men over age 60.  There are, however, enough incidents of the disease among younger men and among women to make it a concern for all. Read more here.

Bladder Cancer.  This cancer is linked closely with drinking and smoking and is also found among people working in the leather, rubber and chemical industries.  The BCG has been found to be an effective treatment in many instances.  Specific treatment options, however, vary depending on the stage the cancer is in when diagnosed.

Uterine Cancer - Just as prostate cancer is found only in men, since only women have a uterus, this cancer is specific to them.  For treatment, doctors might completely remove the uterus or recommend radiation treatment or hormonal therapy.

Skin Cancer -  When caught early, this has one of the highest cure rates of any cancer.  Excessive ultraviolet radiation is the major cause of his disease.  A much more dangerous version of skin cancer is melanoma.  Sometimes, skin-cancer cells can be removed via surgery, and in other cases, chemotherapy is recommended.

Leukemia is defined as cancer of the blood or bone marrow.  When present, leukemia makes the process of blood-clotting difficult.  While all the causes of this disease are not known exposure to chemicals such as benzene and some hair dyes seem to make people more prone to getting this form of cancer.

Some other forms of cancer that we'll discuss on this website include ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, brain cancer, and kidney cancer.
